A new model of psychiatric attention for the 21st century
Our aim is to attend to patients with those psychic alterations, psychoses, and other disorders which by their characteristics should not be treated in traditional psychiatric hospitals, where contact with other kinds of mental illnesses of a more serious type may affect them negatively. These patients can not be adequately treated at home since they often cause disturbances that the family cannot control, which results in anguish and tension that indirectly aggravate their problem. The pathological alterations treated in El Seranil are psychoses of all types: schizophrenia, affective disorders (depressive or manic), organic (ethylic, drug addiction, traumatic, etc.) as well as eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia). Another aim of El Seranil is, once the acute phase is overcome by treatment in our clinic, to help prepare patients for permanent reintroduction into their family, work and social surroundings so as to help avoid possible relapses common in patients faced with normal daily life. Thus El Seranil is a centre that offers patients the total support needed to achieve a fuller recovery, in a manner best suited to the age of each patient.
